Nokia today said it has begun shipping its much-anticipated N8 flagship phone, which runs on its revamped Symbian 3 software. The Finnish handset maker, which last week announced that it was delaying shipments until October, now said customers who pre-ordered the N8 are starting to receive their smartphones.
"The Nokia N8 has received the highest amount of consumer pre-orders in Nokia history", said Jo Harlow, Nokia's senior vice president of smartphones.
The N8 features a 12.0-megapixel camera with high-definition video recording, an AMOLED touch screen display and Dolby Digital Plus surround sound. It will cost around $495 and be launched by over 100 wireless carriers around the world in the coming weeks.
Nokia, which has struggled in recent years, largely from a failure to transition from handsets to smartphones, is now pinning its hopes on a new version of its Symbian software to compete in the high-end segment against Apple and devices that run on Google's Android platform.
Earlier this year, Nokia replaced its top management, in an effort to shake-up the company and turnaround its fortunes.
