Nokia today denied rumors of a delay in the release of its new N8 smartphone, seen as a flagship product needed to turn around the struggling handset maker's fortunes, saying that the device is expected to ship as scheduled."We have said we expect to ship the N8 by the end of the third quarter and that hasn't changed", said Doug Dawson, a Nokia spokesman.
The confusion came about from the fact that its marketing group had informed customers who had pre-ordered the N8 that they would be receiving it in October.
"In some markets, we had planned to start delivering the Nokia N8s to our pre-order customers by the end of September", Nokia had said in the emailed statement. "To ensure a great user experience, we have decided to hold the shipments for a few weeks to do some final amends".
Dawson said that there would be no delays to shipments to stores.
Nokia, which has seen its market share slip amid mounting competition from smartphone specialists Apple and Google, is banking on the N8 to take on the iPhone and Android devices. It runs a revamped Symbian 3 operating system and comes with a 12-megapixel camera with high-definition video recording, a touch screen display and high-speed Internet access.
As part of its turnaround efforts, Nokia replaced its top management, introduced new high-end smartphones and is developing an improved operating system.
